■ ABSTRACT
Future demands for energy production and storage highlight the need for high-performance electrocatalysts. MoS₂ edges have emerged as promising sites for hydrogen reactions, offering near-ideal energetics once kinetic limitations are addressed. In this talk, I will first discuss how edge-dominated kinetics arise in ultra-narrow MoS₂ nanoribbons. Using our templated subtractive patterning process (TSPP), we create large, well-ordered nanoribbon arrays with controlled widths. When ribbons are narrowed below 30 nm, HER activity increases significantly due to more efficient charge transfer to edge sites, and oriented electric fields (OEFs) further accelerate the kinetics.
To overcome the scaling limits between adsorption and desorption, I will then introduce our multisite catalyst platform. By leveraging van der Waals–stacked 2D materials, we assemble catalytic edges with atomically controlled site interaction. This approach identifies multisite configurations that surpass single-site Sabatier scaling, with electrostatic modulation and ab initio simulations revealing direct intermediate exchange. Finally, I will show how these concepts enable bifunctional catalysts for HER and OER, supporting efficient neutral-pH water splitting
