■주제: Processing-in-Memory in real-world commercial DRAM

■요약: Recent AI trends are characterized by a surge in memory‑bound applications, prompting the industry to pursue a variety of hardware‑centric solutions. Among these, Processing‑In‑Memory (PIM) stands out for its ability to substantially increase DRAM bandwidth while reducing energy consumption, thereby addressing the core bottlenecks of data‑intensive AI workloads. Samsung has validated the PIM concept through a proof‑of‑concept implementation using High‑Bandwidth Memory (HBM‑PIM). Building on this foundation, Samsung subsequently developed an LPDDR‑PIM solution, which brings next‑generation PIM capabilities to commercial devices. By integrating PIM into mainstream memory architectures, Samsung seeks to provide a pivotal technology that can accelerate the transition to the AI era, delivering higher performance and energy efficiency for emerging AI applications.

■Bio: Sukhan Lee received a Ph.D degree from Seoul National University. In 2018, he joined the Memory Division, Samsung Electronics, Hwaseong, Korea, where he has been involved in DRAM circuit design. His research interests include memory microarchitecture and AI/LLM-aware hardware architecture and design.
