※ Starting from the Spring Semester of the 2025, the composition of thesis/dissertation committee members will require approval by the Graduate School Committee. As per university regulations, please ensure that you adhere to the guidelines for the composition of the pre defense committee. Due to the newly added approval process, there will be no extension to the application period, nor will there be an additional application period.

Graduate students who are eligible for the thesis/dissertation main defense should be apply for main defense with the following procedures and requirements.

1. Proposal Application Period: April 21(Mon) to 28(Mon), 17:00PM

All of the requirements for the main defense proposal should be produced out by the deadline above.

2. Requirements Document: Master’s and Ph.D./Combined

1) (Required) Main Defense Application Form

※ The committee members consist of the same members as the pre-defense (cannot be changed)

※ Ph.D./Combined students must add 2 members to the committee, including pre-defense committee members.

※ If you need to change the committee due to unavoidable reasons such as retirement, please check with the department office and submit "Thesis Committee Member Replacement" with the application Form.

2) (Required) Declaration of Ethical Conduct in Research

3) (Required) Qualification Certificate for Main Defense + Evidences for Publication (as 1 PDF file)

※ Attached Document: Evidences for Publication document (as below)

- A first page copy of published papers

(Including journals title and publication date, Author(with advisor), Author’s Affiliation(SKKU and department)

- SCI journals must be submitted with evidence of JCR IF or CI at the time of submission or publication (This applies only to Ph.D. and Combined Degree students who are following the completion criteria after the 2025 academic year).

- Please write “Student ID” and the "Number of the publication" on the top right of every evidences documents. And upload in order.

4) (Required) Safety Instruction complete confirmation form + Evidences(Certificate) (as 1 PDF file)

※ Attached Document: Certificate of safety education. You can print at http://safety.skku.edu/

※ Safety education must be completed every semester from admission to this semester.

5) External Committee Member Personal Information + Evidences (Only if you have external member) (as 1 PDF file)

※ Attached Document: “Certificate of employment” or “Screenshot of Institution homepage”

4. How to Apply

1) Download the application form (※ Please be sure to use the form attached to the notice.)

※ If you have Co-advisor, please use the form for “Co-advisor”.

2) Fill the form and obtain the signature of committee members and advisor professor

3) “Apply for Main-defense” through GLS System

① Go to “GLS-신청/자격관리-학위논문심사신청-논문본심신청/신청결과조회” menu

② Insert the Title of the thesis/dissertation

③ Scan and Upload the completed form(with document of evidence) as 1 PDF file to the each section. (File name: Student ID_Name_Title)

④ Insert the advisor and committee member

※ If you have a co-advisor, please insert both advisors in the GLS system.

※ If you have external committee member, Please fill the “External Committee Member Personal Information” form, and attached “Certificate of employment” or “Screenshot of Institution homepage” as 1 PDF file

⑤ Click to “접수신청”

⑥ Graduate Office confirmation and approval

⑦ Print the “접수증”, and Payment(transfer) the main-defense fee

※ Fee for Main Defense: 100,000 Won for Master's, 510,000 Won for PhD and Combined.

※ Payment deadline: - April 30(Wed), 2025

5. Note

1) Each of the Main Defense evidence states an applicant as the first author. It must also specify that the author's university is SKKU(with department) along with his/her advising professor stipulated. The proposal evidence should be published in the conference (journal) or at least accepted with a publication.

2) Thesis/dissertation committee for a main-defense should be must be the same as those assigned for the pre-defense. For doctoral programs, the main-defense committee must include the pre-defense committee members, plus two additional members who may be either full-time faculty members of the university or external committee members.

3) A master's main defense material(Thesis and PT file) should be made up to the uploading period.

4) A Ph.D. (Combined) main defense dissertation should be submitted a week before the date of the public presentation to the dissertation committee you formed.
